My Quest for Friendship with God

It’s four o’clock in the morning, and it’s raining, so yeah, maybe today’s weather will be good.

Or who knows, it’s Delhi where even weather has its surprising nature and is infamous for throwing tantrums.

But fear not, I won’t bore you with it. Instead, let me regale you with yesterday’s adventure.

Yesterday in the evening post work, I went to Gurudwara.

Now, I often visit there with the hope of squeezing a little peace and getting a serving of Kara Prasad.

By the way, if you haven’t tried Kara Prasad yet, you are missing out on dessert nirvana😁.

Sometimes, I ponder if that’s all you need at the end of the day: peace & a serving of Kara Prasad. But that’s a discussion for another time.

So, while there yesterday, I got some compelling urge that I should today actually sit and listen to the Paath (devotional reading, or study of scripture). And now I am glad I did.

I learned that we should learn to introduce ourselves to God. Now, this notion may sound cliché and make it sound like I have a God complex, but it’s actually not.

Here’s why.

In our life, we have got parents (I have got awesome parents), siblings, cousins, friends, relatives (both positive & toxic), and overall, our well-wishers.

We share our life and time with them, and in return, we get nuggets of their life, too. Some good, some bad, some that give us joy, and other that teaches us lessons.

Nothing wrong with that; choosing to be part of the chaos of life, do gives us great benefits. But the cosmic punchline is simple: in the end, no one is immortal; everyone departs, including our ego, & soul.

Yep, even the famous lesson of the song’s message also fades away into the background noise of life.

Song

“Ek din bik jayega mati ke mol, Jag mein reh jayenge pyare tere bol.”

English: One day will erase the value of earth, but your sweet words will remain cherished in this world.

Our words might as well be whispering into oblivion.

But the one who stays with us during the whole journey of your life, and the one who is in your heart, making us breathe, live, love, experience, type this, is someone we often don’t introduce ourselves with.

It’s GOD (or, for atheists, energy that gives them ‘WHY’ of existence).

Why do we do that? And I was genuinely questioning this with myself.

Because I have never done that, yes, I have prayed (both during exams and before results😅), done meditation, and bowed when passed by any religious place, but yet never introduced myself to him.

I have tried to understand the entity of God through my analysis, read about him through what others have written, even questioned him, and sometimes judged him but never introduced myself to him.

What I learned is that’s isn’t a basic fundamental of communication that we all learn in corporates or networking gurus that to break the ice and form a relationship, we should master the art of introducing ourselves.

Even I remember when we used to start a new class at school, every year the teacher used to stand us and ask us for our introduction. It used to be awkward initially for both teachers and students, but soon, the awkward used to faded away.

So maybe we should also do it, rather than just bowing vainly in front of the temple. I should consider introducing myself and making him my friend.

Perhaps, in my next prayer, I will start first with a simple “Hey, What’s up?” before requesting good weather conditions.

I know my simple prayer or request can’t alter the weather, but at least I can make the friendship with the weather guy upstairs — Almighty, who can at least give me some cosmic signal to pick up the umbrella for today? Or maybe not take it🤔?

And it does sound awesome, while bragging that you know someone who manages weather.

Worth the shot, don’t you think?

P.S. I wrote this article around June, 2023 and yes that day weather was pretty dam good 😉.
